Tackling My Home

This has consumed my entire month, and I will be honest and say that I HAVE LOVED IT!  Oh goodness, ever since having Henry last October my home has quietly gone to dirt and disorder.  Before I could go another step with homeschooling, I realized that I needed to invest some time in my home again.  It also helps that my children are going to two VBS weeks this month which frees me up from most of the morning interruptions so that I can actually FOCUS.

I spent a day making cleaning lists to post in every room in my home so that everyone can see the expectations for what a "clean room" is.  So often I can end up reminding or nagging or whatever and now I can just refer all family to the chart.  This keeps the accountability to get the job done and limits the endless "I forgot!"

And after many of years of feeling like I just didn't need a daily cleaning schedule, I woke up one day and realized that I really need a daily cleaning schedule. My brain is just too tired to try to keep up with what needs to be done in the home and things just weren't get cleaned for long stretches of time. Dust and grime and fingerprints were our constant companions, and after only doing this a little over a week, I see a big difference in the feel of our home.

I also moved four of my sons into one closet downstairs.  This felt like a Herculean effort, but is so worth it.  No more clothing upstairs in my older boys' room. Putting away the laundry has been completely simplified by having all of their clothes in one place.  The baskets hold undies, socks, pajamas, and shorts.  T-shirts and collared shirts are hung up.  I actually feel like I can breathe now!

So I have about a week left before I wanted to be done with the whole house.  I think I can do it if I continue to focus like I have been.  We may not get to all three of our attics (we have no garage!), but I know that we can tackle two of them for sure.

And when I sit and have breaks, laughing and snuggling and nursing Henry is the most rejuvenating and life-giving thing ever.

I love your blog! There are always such good ideas!
My kids are all grown and out of the house but I would love a copy of your 'clean' room lists!
Keep up the good work!

I love your list for each room. My daughter had a chore chart for some years, but now that she is older, I would like to update the way we are doing things. I did begin a morning housekeeping to do check off list in a journal/planner with corresponding index cards for each area which keeps the daily stuff in order, but I need to expand that as it does not cover everything I really need to do. It does help me ease myself into better and liveable housekeeping in general though.

You can see it in parts at My Planner. Also, click on the top left side to enter my free giveaway!

I love the idea of posting lists of "how to clean a room"---I'm definitely going to adopt that one around here. My two oldest are 10 & 8, can read well, and I get tired of telling them each little step. Thanks for the tip.
