Simple Breakfast Schedule

Having a baby threw our breakfast routine right out the door. It's been mostly cold cereal around here for 6 months with the occasional baked oatmeal or pancakes. It's just one of those things you have to let go of in order to keep your sanity when change and upheaval happens!

This week I pulled the "breakfast schedule" back out and began implementing it again. I forgot how wonderful it is to see my children eat variety, eat together (instead of each of them getting cereal on their own and at differing times) and eat beautifully (I am actually setting the morning table again!)

Here is the daily schedule. Nothing fancy, but simple, healthy and diverse.

Monday: Yogurt Parfaits (organic vanilla yogurt with granola and frozen fruit)
Tuesday: Whole Grain Bagels with Cream Cheese and Fruit
Wednesday: Baked Oatmeal and Fruit
Thursday: Eggs, Toast, and Fruit
Friday: Muffins or French Toast and Fruit
Saturday: Anything goes...pancakes or cereal or bagels
Sunday: Mike cooks! And that means something with sausage or bacon!

What are your favorite simple breakfasts that don't include cereal??

I like baked oatmeal, muffins, and yogurt parfaits too. I like to make and freeze breakfast burritoes, but I don't have them often because I try to stay away from the fatty sausage. A lot of times on Sunday mornings I just grab a banana with peanut butter before church. I make and freeze sausage balls for the kids.

Breakfast is very important to me. I don't fare so well without it. But it also needs to be easy because cooking is the last thing I want to do first thing in the morning.

Hi Aimee! so nice to meet you. Thanks for visiting my blog. I love your breakfast plan. Sometimes I feel lost in the kitchen and wish someone would magically appear to make wonderful meals everyday. Having a plan to fall back on is a lifesaver. :)

Forgot to mention that I found some great gluten-free frozen waffles at Trader Joe's. I load them up with sliced bananas or cinnamon apples, chopped nuts, flax seeds, cinnamon, sometimes peanut butter, and a sprinkling of powdered sugar.

Bonita, GREAT ideas! I buy the Van's frozen waffles, but have been feeling like they are "empty" without adding something...I am inspired now! Thanks!

Jena, thanks for visiting and looking forward to "getting to know you" more!

I'm with Bonita- I eat Vann's gluten free frozen waffle with peanut butter most mornings. Also, brown rice grits with cinnamon and stevia. I like yogurt with crushed pineapple too. (I have celiac disease thus no gluten!)
I'm trying something different with the kids next week...oatmeal chocolate chip cookies with 1/2 the sugar. I plan on making a big batch and freezig them. I'm hoping I can pop them in the microwave one at a time when I need something quick (that's warm and somewhat healthy).
I almost bought a pack of these in the cereal aisle then decided I could do it cheaper.
Can I have a bite of your breakfast - looks good!

I like having chia seeds soaked in nut milk with sliced apple, cinnamon, and stevia. You soak about 2 1/2 tbsp of chia in 1 cup of liquid for about 15-20 minutes, so if you can remember to prep it before getting cleaned up, it is a quick breakfast. I just made some eggs in muffin tins yesterday which I thought was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to experimenting. I used 6 eggs, 1/2 cup milk, and some sauteed leeks and halved grape tomatoes. This made 9 "muffins" that I baked at 350 for about 20 minutes. I think you could put cheese, meat or a variety of veggies into them and I have read you could reheat them in a microwave (we don't have one, so I don't know how it would taste). We eat oatmeal a few times a week. My favorite ways to have it are soaked over night with a bit of yogurt and water and then it cookes super fast in the morning. We add coconut oil, cinnamon and sweetner. If I don't plan the soaking, I like topping cooked oatmeal with frozen blueberries (I usually let them steam a little bit after the oatmeal is done cooking by putting them into the pot with the lid on, no flame). I also am a big fan of carrot cake oatmeal. I grate a carrot into the cooking water, add a handful of raisins, and a bit of cinnamon and nutmeg and cook all that with the oats. Then I add some walnuts or flax seed before eating and a bit of sweetner. Stevia or maple syrup are good. I have a few more favorites and in the summer we will switch to more raw foods breakfasts, but since this comment is lengthy enough, i will stop now.

Hello! I have to say I have been following your blog for a little bit and I really enjoy it. Thanks for all your wonderful posts!
I love oatmeal and fruit in the morning. I also make and freeze my own waffles from time to time. Egg sandwiches are always great too, especially if you have leftover ham or something to go with it. There are some great breakfast bar recipes out there too.

HI Aimee! You'd LOVE a very old book I read when my kids were little like yours. It's called Musings of a Mother. I wonder if you could still find it. Happy Breakfasting!

Thanks for the ideas - I feel like our breakfast routine is in a bit of a rut, so this gives me a li'l kick in the keester ;) One of my favorite keep-on-hand breakfasts is banana muffins, made with a dollop of PB in the middle. The kids gobble them for snack, too
