Mike and I are in the midst of the twelve week Financial Peace University class that is taught by Dave Ramsey. This past week we talked about "buyer beware!" in regards to the sophistication of marketing today and the ploys to get us to spend, spend, spend. It is amazing the amount of money, creativity, and repetition that goes into the subliminal (and not so subliminal!) messages of our consumer-driven culture. We think that if we buy something new, that we are new! That we need that new item for our wardrobe, our kitchen, our children. That life will be easier if we just have that new gadget. I have even stopped receiving the Sunday newspaper because I would spend my day pouring over the ads to find all the "great deals" of stuff we didn't need...and it created a tremendous amount of discontent with the current status of my home and wardrobe. So my "buyer beware" antenna is up right now...not in a paranoid way, but in a eyes-wide-open wisdom sort of way.
So this led me to notice Walmart's catch phrase "More for Less". It just totally bugged me when I began to think about that simple phrase. Do I really NEED more for less? Do I really need to spend the "less" that Walmart offers me only so that I can accumulate MORE? And more of what? Most of the stuff in Walmart is poorly made, lacks true beauty and creativity, and will not last very long. I read something recently that talked about how companies actually make products to break quickly so that we will have to buy another one more quickly! And Walmart doesn't seem to sell many products from companies that actually value quality, sustainability, and longevity. We get so trapped into thinking that we have to spend less so that we can have more. I am seeing that there is nothing wrong with spending MORE on a few quality items and being content with LESS stuff.
And I then saw a Walmart commercial using their new phrase "Save Money. Live Better." So if I save money by going to shop there I will be living better? Equating shopping at Walmart with a better life? Wow. My worst ever shopping experiences have all happened there. The parking lot is a zoo. The bright glaring lights give me headaches. The stuff is overwhelming and mostly tacky and cheap. The clientele leave much to be desired in the respect for children category. Some of my hardest emotionally stressful days have been spent feeling like I have to shop there to save a few pennies in order to have a better life? If that is the better life, no thanks.
One of the best decisions I have made in recent years is to say no to Walmart and to "live better" by shopping at our local Publix grocery store. Kind and extremely helpful managers, cashiers, deli workers, and baggers. Beautiful quality produce and meats. Great food choices, clean store, environmentally conscious, and they load up my groceries in my van for me! Does it cost more? Yes! Is it worth it? Yes! Do I spend less on "stuff" now? Yes! I'd rather spend money on quality foods and have a great shopping experience than acquiring more trinkets for $3.96.
Certainly where we shop is a matter of personal preference. But I will say that more and more I hear fellow mamas thinking they HAVE to shop at Walmart for the well-being of their family's purse and they absolutely hate it and feel trapped to it. I just want to offer the freedom to STOP shopping there and that you can still save money shopping elsewhere and you will actually buy less random stuff that was "a good deal". Realize the power of marketing these days and that everyone is competing for your dollar and your loyalty.
Less is more.
Buy quality and live better.
Buyer Beware!

Down with Wal.Mart!!!! :)
I haven't shopped at Wal.Mart since August 2007, and I feel like such a dork when i say this, but I feel that my quality of life increased exponentially when I stopped shopping there...for all the reasons you mentioned. Even though I visit more shops, it doesn't take much more time and it is a much more enjoyable experience. Yay for locally owned stores, where the people who work there have a vested interest in our quality shopping experience! :)
What a great post, Aimee. Everything you've written is true -- so true.
I've made many similar changes in the last few years. Saving a few pennies is NOT worth the frustration and energy often required.
And the American mantra of "more for less" is damaging to the soul and the pocketbook.
Aimee,
I love the "Buyer Beware" thing.
Isn't it funny how Wal Mart almost twists their marketing around in that little slogan "More for Less"? Like shopping there will make you feel "good" for spending not so much money on junk that we have no idea where it came from.
I don't shop at Wal Mart, either. But mostly because our local Wal MArt is messy, dirty, and just plain despressing to shop in!! If I need tolietries, etc, I'll go to the local drug store privately owned, and I enjoy it so much better!! I always go out of my way to find helpful "venues" to shop in. I will always go to the one that is clean and the people are nice and helpful. Thankfully, that usually is a local business.
Wonderful post!...and very encouraging...there are still certain things it is hard for me to buy elsewhere because I feel I need to go cheaper since we do not have a lot of money...but I am never as satisfied.
Also..I saw pictures of the Janssen's visit to your home. Looks like you guys had a lot of fun. :)
Great post Aimee! My favorite (in terms of you must be kidding) commercial on TV right now is for a minivan...everyone in the family is horribly disconnected, mom pulls into the driveway with this great new van and suddenly the family can't wait to spend the day together! Give me a break...but talk about a message.
I'm not fond of W-M, but Costco is my personal bugaboo. Why does the average 2.2 kids/mom/dad American family NEED what Costco is selling. And you must pay a membership fee to take advantage of all these spectacular deals!
Less is more, I completely agree. I have gone without shopping except for groceries for different time periods, and it makes me realize I can shop to feel good, at least temporarily.
I totally agree with you, Aimee. I despise the Walmart experience so much yet agonized for awhile because so many moms around me said they HAVE to shop there because the prices are so good. I don't think those prices are good for our economy, the companies that produce the goods, or me. The cost of such cheap products is too high. Not to mention the therapy I feel like I need after dealing with even a moment in that store.
Aimee K- Howdy from your alter ego, Indy Aimee K! I too quit getting the paper about 4 months ago- what a difference. Not to mention saving on our paper consumption. (I get the neighbor's for my compost!)
I don't know if you all have ALDI's but they are amazing for saving money and simplifing. They are a European company and are really starting to grow over here. Check them out if you have them(look online)-but remember to take a quarter for your cart(you get it back), your own bags(can buy there also) and your debit card or cash-NO VISA~
It is a very simple, no frills grocery store-my friends, neighbors, and family have all converted to Aldi's!
Have an awesome week-Aimee K
A woman after my own heart! lol
I couldn't agree more.
Btw, I grafted this post to my most recent one, and also quoted you. Hope it's okay.
Thanks for another thoughtful post:)
Aimee, Amen! Bless you! Love, Tami
Aimee,
I too have not "shopped" Walmart in quite some time. I frequent Publix and enjoy a peaceful experience where I evaluate my spending and feel good when I leave with what I *need.* :) I also imposed a "no spending" on our family expenses since Christmas and I am amazed at what we have saved. It is so easy to do and so cool to see what you can not spend! :)
Have a great wk!
Rebecca
PS...I am coming for H's jacket! :)
Thank you for your informative post. Its interesting to know that subliminal cds can have this effect. This website at
http://www.chargedaudio.com has a lot of subliminal products. How about giving it a try.
I saw your comment on my swap blog. The next swap will start in mid- to late May, so you won't have to wait too long. Thanks for your interest and I will try to remember to contact you when the next sign ups start. http://btrsswap.blogspot.com

Great post, Aimee. I hope you don't mind if I put a link to it in my post.
I couldn't agree more.
Here, here sister! Amen to all that you posted!
As soon as S gets back from overseas we are starting a financial class at our church called Common Cents. I can't wait!
I could have written this myself (buy not as eloquently as you did!)
I completely relate with all you've said here. I HATE my shopping experiences at Walmart. It's funny because I'm supposed to be saving money right? Well every time I come out of there I feel poor and depressed. I feel much better about myself and surroundings budgeting my money well at our local (clean and staffed with nice people) Wegmans.
We appear to be on the same journey. We've been striving to simplify our lives in all areas. It really requires a lot of conscious thought, and yet the rewards are there. We are enjoying it so much and getting a lot more creative!
I HATE to shop at Walmart. That's not saying I never do, but I try to steer clear of that place as much as possible. I feel like just another dollar in there and not a real human with value.
Hey girl, just checking out your blog again. . .I must confess since living here, with so few shopping choices, I've shopped at WalMart more than when I lived there, BUT it is not satisfying at all. I agree with the comment about ALDI. . .it is heads and tails above Walmart. I still want to join the local farmers co-op grocery that is trying to make it here. . .will make me feel so good to put money into their hands---
